For the first time inducted at the Geneva Motor Show 2019, the Polestar 2, which stands as the great competitor of Tesla vehicles, is the figurehead of the subsidiary of Volvo Cars in the niche of electric.
After testing the plug-in hybrid with its Polestar 1 coupe, the manufacturer specialized in high-performance electric vehicles has passed the 100% electric mark by presenting the successor to the first-named, the Polestar 2. Having become independent in 2017, the brand still remains under the thumb of Volvo Cars, the main shareholder of the company.
And the least we can say is that this Polestar 2 wants to strike a big blow on the niche of the electric. To do this, Polestar set out to design a zero-emission vehicle capable of putting sticks in the wheels of Tesla, which is also inspired in part. For the first time exhibited in the Geneva Motor Show 2019, the Polestar 2 has clearly made its effect.
Exterior design
Presented by Polestar as a fastback sedan - because marked by a roofline that descends to the rear of the model - the Polestar 2 still displays the tunes of SUV. This five-door hatchback is distinguished by its panoramic roof, but also and especially by its rear light signature, overflowing (upper part) and even through (lower) the entire trunk.
Interior design
The interior of the Polestar is logically reminiscent of the Tesla: sleek and minimalist. A large 11.15-inch touchscreen comes between the front passenger and the driver, which is supported by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. For the occasion, the teams of the firm wanted to make their model a truly premium product, with carefully chosen materials.
" Vegan interior materials as standard, decorative elements in black ash and reconstituted wood, textile surface panels, and optional Nappa leather " make up the interior. Also note the presence of a smartphone wireless charging located in the front part of the center console, and a trunk volume of 404 liters.
Performance and autonomy
Based on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture ( CMA) platform, the Polestar 2 is equipped with a double electric motor - one on each axle - of 150 kW, for a cumulative power of 300 kW, or 407 horsepower, and a torque of 660 Nm. What allows him to shoot down the 0 to 100 km / h in less than five seconds. Its top speed, however, was not communicated.
Its 78 kWh lithium-ion battery offers it a range of 500 kilometers in a single charge. Polestar praises its small size, which reduces " noise, vibration, and harshness by 3.7 dB ", for very quiet user experience. The addition of regenerative braking is a plus: when the driver releases the accelerator, the vehicle brakes on its own.
At the time of delivery, the Polestar 2 will be accompanied by an onboard charger of 11 kW. But the brand has not published any reference time in terms of loading. Compatibility with a fast load of 150 kW is in any case appropriate.
Systems and Features
This is one of the great strengths of Polestar 2: it's ultra connectivity. Its main asset is its Android-powered infotainment system, which includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store. For example, changing music or managing the temperature of the vehicle with the voice is possible.
A dedicated application has logically been developed by the group, on which the user will find all the information of his car. But above all, the latter is able to adapt to the habits of its owner (position of seats and mirrors, applications used), configuring them automatically as it enters the cabin.
In addition to the integrated sound system provided by the specialist Harman Kardon, sensors nestled in the seats are able to detect the presence of the driver and start the vehicle in stride. Finally, adaptive tail lights " illuminate more intensely as the braking is stronger, illuminate differently depending on the weather and provide a visual signal indicating in which direction the car is moving back, "reads the product sheet.
Price and availability
First, be aware that a performance pack has been included in the offer, including Brembo brakes, specific 20-inch wheels, and Öhlins shock absorbers. Produced in China from 2020, the Polestar 2 will initially be subject to open pre-orders on its official website, and only available for a small handful of countries.
China, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Great Britain are among the first elected. Initially, only the " Launch Edition " version will be available for the most interested, priced at 59,900 euros, before the basic version will arrive later at a price of 39,900 euros.
