Volkswagen would share its electric platform with Ford

Last January, the German manufacturer Volkswagen and the American Ford announced their cooperation on utility models and pick-ups. A collaboration that, according to Reuters, may have deepened.

No explanation yet confirmed

According to the press agency, the two brands have expanded their cooperation in the field of electricity, which would have the main effect of allowing the US brand to use the platform SEM, developed for electric vehicles by Volkswagen. However, impossible to know more even if in January, the CEO of Volkswagen Herbert Diess had announced that Ford and Volkswagen were "  in an open and constructive dialogue to optimize the technology. Probably not internationally, but in Europe and China.

Still, according to Reuters, which quotes an anonymous source, this association would be plausible and would also relate to autonomous carsVolkswagen would turn to Argo AI, a company that develops this type of software, and in which Ford has recently invested a billion dollars. This partnership on autonomous technologies would, therefore, explain the end of the collaboration announced last month between the German manufacturer and Aurora, a German start-up specializing in the development of driverless car systems.

The advanced Volkswagen probably at the source

The German manufacturer was lagging behind two years ago in the electrification of its models. But the scandal of the Dieselgate has pushed the company to accelerate its research in the sector, and the time lost seems to be caught up for Volkswagen, which begins to prove itself on zero emissions.

The ID. R broke the Goodwood Festival of Speed record this weekend, after becoming the fastest car on Pikes Peak, and breaking the speed record for an electric car on the Nürburgring last June. The first 100% electric road model of the manufacturer, the ID. 3, also left to meet a very nice success.

Although the collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen is proven, the terms and conditions are still to be conditional. However, they should be discussed at the meeting of the Volkswagen Board of Directors on July 11, after which announcements could be made quickly to detail the agreements between the two brands.
