A new Apple patent for an AR headset that would "read" the whole face of the user

A new Apple patent for an AR headset that would "read" the whole face of the user

It's been several months since rumors about an augmented reality project developed by Apple hang on the web. Rumors that make them talk again through a patent of the Cupertino company.

With this patent, we discover augmented reality glasses capable of detecting the facial expressions and gestures of its wearer. Not to mention the presence of the very principle of augmented reality: virtual elements superimposed on reality. A new track in the development of an attractive technology in the eyes of Apple.

Apple recurs in the field of augmented reality with a new patent

The firm has never hidden its interest in augmented reality. Its ARKit, which allows iOS developers to offer this technology in their applications, is the proof. But, Apple went even further with the filing of a patent, early in the year.

We discover augmented reality glasses capable of detecting the expressions and gestures of its wearer thanks to numerous sensors. The patent suggests that it would be possible to control the functions of the connected device through the face and body of the user.

The patent also shows glasses equipped with cameras on the facades to affix virtual elements to the real world - the very principle of augmented reality. We can then imagine a lot of possibilities, from the extensive use of Maps to video games exploiting technology in-depth (like a Pokémon Go ). Not to mention the potential presence of Animojis, application mimicking the expression of the user through animals, and introduced with the iPhone X with its 3D sensors (Face ID).

Technology that may not come into existence

The big question remains: "  Will Apple be marketing such AR glasses?  ". Because the filing of a patent does not necessarily rhyme with the release of a product using the technology described in the document. The Cupertino company could simply seek to protect its ideas.
Not to mention that many rumors evoke the abandonment of Apple AR glasses: it must be said that these last drag for a moment in the cartons of the Cupertino company. Meanwhile, the information of this patent is to be taken with tweezers until nothing has been formalized.
