Cyberpunk 2077: our preview tinged with disappointment at the Paris Games Week

On the occasion of the Paris Games Week 2019, Cyberpunk 2077 was approached during a presentation of about an hour. If the title of CD Projekt RED was unfortunately not playable, we had the chance to discover it via a long sequence of gameplay fully dubbed in French. In order to keep the suspense, we will reveal only a few details about the scenario. Here is our opinion on this demo.

A plastic not (yet) convincing

The demo broadcast in a small room in the Bandai Namco booth was similar to the E3 2019 (and Gamescom by extension) demo. After a quick tour of the hero's customization possibilities, the developers immersed the audience in the tortuous maze of the fictional city of Night City. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 was totally devastated by a major economic crisis and the Pacifica neighborhood was hit hard by this event. The streets are mournful, the dilapidated dwellings and buildings under construction will never be completed. From the outset, we must recognize that the atmosphere is striking. The wild nature of The Witcher 3 is just a distant memory.

If Cyberpunk 2077 has a unique atmosphere, the plastic of the title of CD Projekt RED is far from irreproachable. Blame it on a framerate capricious, aliasing quite pronounced on certain decorations and animations not always detailed. Of course, these elements can be improved by the end of the game next April. To end the purely visual dimension, some of the environments are destructible and gunfights leave marks inside the buildings. What reinforce the impression of realism ...

From freedom to RPG, there is only one step

Created by the fathers of the video game adaptations of The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077 inevitably inherits the RPG dimension. For example, extremely complete skill trees can be completed throughout the game. The game also introduces the everlasting rarity index on equipment. Thus, clothing and other implants offer significant benefits during combat. Role-playing lovers will be thrilled at all the options available to them. But the real strength of soft lies elsewhere.

During this presentation at Paris Games Week, the development teams alternated between two heroes to illustrate the different approaches during a single mission. For example, the V (the name given to the main protagonist) belonging to the Netrunner class can hack devices (cameras, turrets, implants enemies ...) to sneak discreetly. In contrast, the "Powerful Solo" has the ability to open doors with bare hands and inflict heavy damage by entering the pile. A little like a Fallout, the choices are also found during dialogues with NPCs. These decisions mean that a situation may be totally different from one party to another. Because, as the developers confirmed again,

A real revolution?

Who says solo game, necessarily says dream casting. Thus, the legendary Keanu Reeves (who plays the role of Johnny Silverhand) gave the reply to V at several crucial moments of the demo. The opportunity to see that the French dubbing seems to be of irreproachable quality. The lip sync is convincing, just like acting always very fair. Immersion is at the rendezvous, reinforced by the point of view in the first person. Fortunately, the player may decide to switch to the third person during certain passages as during the driving phases in a motorcycle or car.

By opting for this FPS view, Cyberpunk 2077 necessarily goes through the box of "comparisons" with the genre. If this perspective remains immersive, we must also recognize that it is a little less the road during the gunfights. The latter still lacks dynamism and readability once released into the arena. Infiltration is also not immune to some imperfections with an AI sometimes a little blind. Again, the final version could well erase these small defects.

Conclusion

Despite its undeniable qualities with its RPG elements, its city full of life and the freedom left to the player in his approach as in dialogues, Cyberpunk 2077 did not seem revolutionary in his proposals. The pace of progression in this demo was rather choppy and situations put forward a little mundane. It will be necessary to make a notice in hand when Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on April 16, 2020.
