Mercedes shares its sound approach for electric vehicles in video

Since 1 st July, electric cars are obliged to make a sound. Mercedes unveiled the one that will make its first electric vehicle, the EQC.

A measure was taken by the European Union to avoid accidents because electric cars would be too quiet and therefore dangerous for pedestrians.

A well-followed European directive

A month after Jaguar and its I-Pace, it is, therefore, Mercedes that reveals the sound that will emit its vehicles to prevent accidents. This European directive requires manufacturers to implement the AVAS system Acoustic Vehicle Alert System ) which requires electric vehicles to warn of their presence when they drive less than 20 km / h.

The German firm has, of course, responded to this request and proves it by publishing this comparative video of one of its thermal models and its new zero-emission SUV, the EQC.

A different approach from other manufacturers

For example, the Daimler engineers, of which Mercedes is a subsidiary, have looked at the question:

"  It is because we are subject to these rules and others that the sound experts of the Mercedes acoustic test center -Benz Technology Center(MTC) in Sindelfingen are working to give a voice to electrified Mercedes. Special microphones in the outdoor test infrastructure are used to develop an individually configured e-sound for each modelSimulations, measurements, evaluations and detailed progress will continue until the result is perfect. During the tests in question, there is a particularly sensitive passenger on board, the artificial head. It records the slightest noises and gets very close to human hearing.

Mercedes engineers will have to know how to satisfy each market since the regulations are different in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The AVAS sound system from Mercedes differs only slightly between the EU, Japan, and China. There are other requirements for the USA, for example, regarding the sound volume. When parked, the vehicle must already generate a sound when speed is engaged and becomes stronger at 30 km / h. Shutting down the AVAS manually is banned in just about every country,  "says a Daimler statement.
