July 2 to 8, 2019 was held in Sydney Robocup. This Robotics World Cup was won by the Bordelaise team Rhoban, the only French team competing in this category.
The RoboCup is a robot competition and football. It has existed since 1996 and in 2019, it attracted no less than 3,500 participants and their 3,000 robots, from 45 countries to perform the show in front of 40,000 spectators. The rules are the same as those of FIFA, only the field and the participant's change.
What is Robocup?
We can see different categories, like the "average size" where robots are on wheels and play with a tennis ball. The category "human size", it involves robots between 1 meter 20 and 1 meter 50, each supported by a person to prevent falls.
Finally, there is the category "child template", the one in which Rhobanwon with robots between 40 and 90 cm. The field, in this case, is artificial turf and measures 6 meters by 9 meters, while the game is played with a real football.
Note that there is another category, with dematerialized games that are done through artificial intelligence in the form of a video game.
A fourth consecutive victory
The Rhoban team arrived victorious at the end of this World Cup. Composed of students and teacher-researchers from the computer research laboratory of the University of Bordeaux, she defended her title and won the competition for the fourth time in a row, before receiving the congratulations of Cédric O, secretary of the State in charge of the Digital.
The Robocup is not only a football world cup, but it is also an event that stimulates research and arouses the interest of the youngest. At the end of each tournament, the winner displays his computer codes to allow his opponents to be inspired to do better. A fair-play spirit that led Rhoban to his only defeat, as the team had sold its code to a Chinese rival before a non-playoff match, thus being beaten by the Middle Kingdom team.
Regardless, Rhoban is not going to stop there and will put his title in play at home, since the Robocup will be held in Bordeaux next year, from June 23 to 29, 2020.
