Sonata: Hyundai and Yandex autonomous car unveiled before launch in Moscow

Backed by their bilateral partnership, South Korean automaker Hyundai and Russia's Yandex have unveiled their jointly developed autonomous car, the Hyundai Sonata 2020.

An alliance that is clearly paying off. Last March, the famous car manufacturer Hyundai got closer to a Russian company called Yandex. The latter is actually the origin of the main search engine used in his country, but has a large number of strings to his bow, in the areas of transport, online advertising, and mobile applications, as an example.

A first prototype unveiled

The objective of this newly created new pair was mainly based on the development of level 4 and 5 autonomous vehicles, ie cars capable, in the end, of self-management without the presence of a human being. At the end of May, Yandex teams received a Hyundai Sonata in which an autonomous driving system was to be integrated. It is now done six weeks later.

A press release on Medium unveils its first prototype driverless vehicle, the Hyundai Sonata 2020, which is currently being extensively tested on Yandex test grounds. The idea is to test its reliability in various climatic conditions, all in real situations involving other autonomous cars in circulation.

A large fleet in approach

Ambitious, Yandex hopes to boost its fleet by 100 models by the end of 2019 in order to, in the near future, deploy its first autonomous vehicle in the streets of Moscow, according to the company.

His alliance with Hyundai would also allow him to integrate his system on new models of the Asian brand, including the subsidiary (Kia, in particular).
