A Spanish customer has hijacked the e-merchant's return verification system, which works by weight. It was finally discovered after opening a website for the resale of its products.
It is a well-honed technique used by a customer of Amazon to acquire many technological products without spending a single euro.
Kilos of land have deceived the surveillance of Amazon's control systems
The 22-year-old has devised a ploy that cleverly hijacks Amazon's package check system. Indeed, when returning an order to the warehouses, packages are not opened, but simply weighed to ensure that the weight is consistent with that of the order delivered.
The young man simply poured in each carton of earth, to the nearest gram, to simulate the presence of the product. The technique was infallible and he was able to order 330 000 euros of products on the site, being systematically refunded and without ever being unmasked.
Man faces up to six years in prison
But the lure of gain eventually lost this rogue. Rather than keeping the devices for him, he opened a website for resale, with some success.
For its part, one of Amazon's logistics platforms questioned the impressive number of returns from this one person and looked at it more closely before finally contacting the authorities.
The Barcelona police arrested the young man and released him on bail pending trial. He faces up to six years in jail for scam and should not order anytime soon on Amazon.
