From now on, electric and hybrid vehicles must emit a sound (Update)

Electric car

Too quiet to get the maximum attention from cyclists and pedestrians, among other things, electric and hybrid vehicles will have to make more noise to comply with the new regulations.

Update 02/07/2019:
We announced it a few weeks ago, the measure is now an application. All vehicles sold in Europe from yesterday must imperatively emit a warning sound signaling their presence and allowing other road users to hear and therefore locate them.

The European Union has put an end to a cruel dilemma. The electric car is good, it's cleaner and it's certainly less noise. What to reduce noise pollution, a luxury when you live on the edge of a popular road or in a big city. Except that in busy areas, this technological silence is sometimes dangerous. Pedestrians, cyclists, scooter users or other Segways may sometimes not hear a car and its silent engine approaching. And here is the drama.

A sound for vehicles traveling under 20 km / h

The silence of electric and hybrid vehicles causes accidents that sadden the European Union. It has just decided that from 1 July 2019, all non-thermal cars manufactured in Europe will have to be equipped with an acoustic vehicle warning system.

According to the EU Regulation, this system, which emits noise, must be activated when a vehicle is traveling at a speed below 20 km / h and broadcast a sound with a minimum threshold of the set at 56 decibels. Manufacturers will have to comply with the new regulations for all new vehicles. As Auto Express points out, we are talking about a sound equivalent to an electric toothbrush.

No predefined noise type

The European Union is convinced that this preventive noise will limit the risk of accidents and, in fact, improve the safety of users. Pedestrians with their eyes fixed on their smartphones will also be sensitized. On the other hand, if you put headphones on your ears and your hair is pushed in your headphones, it is not certain that the sound emitted is very effective.

Finally, note that if the noise power is limited, nothing is indicated as to the "type" of sound that the vehicles will have to emit. Why not imagine a little sound of cowhide or other animal noise or music or voice is known? The builders have probably already thought about it.

What do you think of this initiative taken by the European Union?
