Microsoft has confirmed that the first version of its mixed reality headset has now entered Long Term Service (LTS), meaning it will only receive security updates for the next 10 years.

The HoloLens first name is now missing major updates to Windows 10. For the next 10 years, the Microsoft mixed reality headset will, therefore, turn on the October 2018 version of the operating system, but will continue to receive security patches.

A quick switch to HoloLens 2

An unequivocal decision from Microsoft, which also deprives the HoloLens of some new developments in mixed reality included in the Windows update of May 2019. One thinks in particular of the possibility of launching applications Win32 in mixed reality.

A hasty decision, although not surprising on the part of the manufacturer, which gently hopes to push developers to equip themselves in HoloLens 2, which was announced at the MWC in Barcelona last February.

However, the Redmond firm seems to put the cart before the horse. The developer edition of HoloLens 2 is already in pre-order, but shipments are not planned before the end of the year.

Faster, more powerful and above all with a 52 ° field of view, the HoloLens 2 takes advantage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 SoC to allow developers to create ever more advanced applications in the field of mixed reality. It starts at $ 3,500, with 500 credits for the Azure Cloud, and three months of testing at Unity Pro and the Unity PiXYZ plugin for modeling.
