Will Facebook and Google ban political ads before the British elections?

Many voices are coming up in the United Kingdom asking web platforms to suspend political ads for the upcoming election in just over five weeks.
The subject of political ads has been hotly debated since Facebook announced that it does not check these publications, even if they contain untruths.

The UK wants to avoid fake news during this sensitive ballot

The United Kingdom will enter a period of early parliamentary elections, following the great imbroglio that crosses the country about Brexit. In just over five weeks, voters will be invited to the polls to confirm the current policy led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson or hand over the keys of power to the Labor camp. This short election period could be the target of misleading advertising that could affect the course of the vote.

To prevent this situation, activists, universities and non-profit organizations like Mozilla or the Open Data Institute sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai, CEOs of Facebook and Google, and Nick Clegg and Kent Walker, their respective politicians. They ask both companies to stop political advertising until December 12, election date.

Claims that might not be heard by Facebook

The signatories explain in their mail that the British legislation is not ready to frame the dissemination of these advertising inserts and that there is no time for the government and parliamentarians to address the issue.

This legislative black spot is particularly worrying in light of Facebook's recent policies aimed at allowing politicians to openly publish misinformation through advertisements. The lack of transparency about the data used to target the advertisements and the way in which these advertisements are targeted is just as worrying,  "the authors continue.

They are hopeful to be heard, taking Israel and Canada as examples, two countries where Google stopped the broadcast of political ads during the election period. Facebook for its part never conceded to pause this activity that brings him a lot of money.
