The United States should lift the ban on Huawei smartphones "very quickly"

The United States will grant licenses to certain American companies so that they can work with Huawei despite the sanctions put in place against the Chinese manufacturer. Google could be concerned.

It has now been more than six months since Huawei was blacklisted in the United States. This means that US companies, as well as companies using US technologies, are prohibited from collaborating with the Chinese group. Today, this heavy penalty could finally be eased.

The vise is loosening (a little)

In fact, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross told Bloomberg that his administration was preparing to grant licenses to allow US companies to return to work with Huawei. He said that so far 260 applications had been filed, more than the US government had anticipated.

Be careful, however: if it is a gesture of relaxation, Huawei will remain bound hand and foot. Wilbur Ross says that the first authorizations should arrive "  very quickly  ", but that all requests will not be accepted. It also enjoins American companies on the assumption that they will not obtain a license; these will only be granted in exceptional cases.

The return of the Play Store on Huawei smartphones?

It is not yet known which companies will be able to resume their business with Huawei. The first one we think of is of course Google. The Chinese manufacturer had to release its Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro without license Android, ie without the services and applications of Google. A lack that is not very serious in China, where consumers are used to doing without American platforms, but can very strongly impact international sales. The Mate 30 could be released in several European countries, including France, on November 15th. We will soon know if they will be entitled to the Play Store and its consorts.

On the other hand, it is likely that the US does not give much leeway to companies wishing to use Huawei's telecom technologies. Huawei 4G or 5G equipment is the main fear of the United States, which suspects that backdoors are left for espionage purposes. But some minor operators, who officiate in the countryside, are still very dependent on Huawei which offers unbeatable value for money. Also, the idea of a compromise to help these actors is not unthinkable.

The United States may, however, decide to participate financially in the purchase of telecom equipment from other groups (Nokia, Ericsson ...) to support these operators without having to resort to Huawei equipment.
