After scooters, Segway launches electric motorcycles

Mainly known for its Segways and electric scooters, the Segway manufacturer has decided to position itself on the niche of zero-emissions motocross. Two models integrate its offer: the X160 and the X260.

In recent years, Segway products have managed to gain a foothold in the niche of urban electric micro-mobility. From scooters to gyropods to gyro rides, the American company that was placed under the auspices of the Chinese company Ninebot in 2015 has positioned itself on a multitude of zero-emission products.

Attract new customers

Now the group is attacking another category of vehicles: motocross, also electrified. The segment on which several actors have already placed their pawn. It does not matter: the overseas firm tries its luck by arming itself with two models answering the name of X160 and X260. The second being more powerful than the first.

"  We are trying to continue to develop cool and futuristic products, to expand our offer and attract new adventurers in addition to our urban clientele. We want to continue developing our existing customer base and give them more options,  "said Julie Tang, marketing director of the firm, in the columns of Electrek.

Two models that oppose

The X160 is thus equipped with a 3 kW engine propelling it at a maximum speed of 50 km / h. Its 1 kWh battery also gives it a range of 65 kilometers, all accompanied by 17-inch wheels. The X260's data sheet is cleaner on paper: a 5 kW engine, a top speed of 75 km / h, a 1.8 kWh battery, a 120-kilometer range, and 19-inch wheels.

As Electrek points out, the pair draws in the aesthetic lines of the Sur Ron motorbikes, of which Segway is the main shareholder. Initially marketed in the United States through a pre-order period on the Indiegogo platform, the X160 and X260 will cost, respectively, $ 2,999 and $ 4,999. Production and deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2020.
