Unused Microsoft accounts now deleted after two years

You currently have until August 30 to find your passwords.

Previously, users had five years to access Microsoft services. This period has been revised downwards to two years.

One year after the agreement for five years, we go to two years

According to the new metrics published by Microsoft, you will now need to log in at least once every two years to your Microsoft account if you do not want it removed.

Since the rule will come into effect on August 30, you have more than a month to recover your credentials if you do not want to lose your account and your data permanently.

Exceptions are possible and listed by Microsoft

No worries though: If any of the next situations match yours, and even if you have not signed in recently, your account will not be deleted:

  • If you have made any product or service purchased from Microsoft,
  • if you have a Microsoft subscription,
  • if you publish apps or games on the Store,
  • if you have a Microsoft certification in your possession,
  • if your Microsoft balance is positive,
  • if Microsoft has to pay you any amount,
  • if you are the guardian of the family and as long as your minor child's account is not closed, yours will not be closed.

Finally, if Microsoft simply decides not to close it, then your account will remain active.
