Microsoft will integrate deeper third-party voice assistants, including Alexa, which can be used from the screen lock computer. For its part, Cortana seems more than ever close to abandonment.
Despite his repeated efforts, Microsoft has never convinced users of the usefulness or relevance of his Cortana voice assistant, who has taken note of it for several months.
Alexa could become the main voice assistant for Windows 10
The major update in May 2019 had already separated Cortana from the search bar, making it an independent and optional application. Amazon, for its part, through a partnership between the two companies, proposed the installation of its own Alexa assistant in Windows 10, giving access to the many services offered by the giant e-commerce.
The next major release of the operating system will go even further in the integration. Indeed, Alexa can be used from the lock screen of the computer, a privilege reserved only to Cortana so far.
Users will be able to use their computer to launch a song on Spotify, ask for the next day's weather or pilot a home automation device with a simple voice command, without touching a single button on the computer. Google Assistant could also help if Google decides to develop a specific version for the operating system of Microsoft.
Cortana relegated to the corporate world
This strategic shift is a new highlight in Cortana's coffin. The voice assistant is gradually removed from the various components of Windows 10, proof that Microsoft no longer has the hope of making a serious rival against Google Assistant, Siri or Alexa for the general public.
During its Build 2019 conference, the publisher explained that it wanted to reorient Cortana towards the professional environment, with deep integration into its various office and business software.
