The first battery cruiser is launched

It's not just the automotive world that is doing its energy revolution! At sea too, new forms of mobility are being studied and emerging. Illustration with the new shipping ship of the Norwegian company Hurtigruten - the Roald Amundsen - equipped with a hybrid system with electric batteries.

A hybrid cruise ship

The Roald Amundsen is a hybrid-powered vessel, the first of its kind, designed for cruises along the Norwegian coast. This expedition boat features a hybrid propulsion system developed by Rolls-Royce, which reduces emissions by 20% compared to traditional boats of the same size.

Four Bergen B33: 45 engines are coupled to the batteries, representing a major technological innovation in the field.
With 530 passengers, the boat has 265 cabins, most of them with balconies. It has a length of 140 meters and a width of 23.6 meters. The Roald Amundsen has just been delivered and goes to the Arctic to make his first trips; he should be heading to Antarctica in October.

Towards electric cruise ships?

The Roald Amundsen is only the first of a series of three boats ordered by Hurtigruten at the Norwegian shipyard Kleven. This will follow the Fridtjof Nansen, scheduled for 2020, with bigger batteries, then a third ship.

The technology that the Fridtjof Nansen will receive will allow him to navigate in 100% electric mode. While the Roald Amundsen can reduce fuel consumption by using batteries during periods of high demand, the Fridtjof Nansen will be able to navigate by the mere force of the batteries. It is, in particular, the arrivals to quay which will be able to be done in electric, to limit the emissions.

Ultimately, Roald Amundsen, who has just sailed in recent days, will be "converted" to receive this 100% electric system.
