The smartphone could become the means that would boost the management of the flow of passengers, which will progress in the coming years.
And if your smartphone served you as a passport? This is neither to exclude nor unthinkable, quite the opposite. The mobile phone already used boarding pass through the magic of applications and/or PDF, it could soon replace the passport, as evidenced by the test conducted since last week by Canada and the Netherlands.
Facing the growing influx of travelers
For several days testing the travelers travel without passports, as part of the pilot project KTDI (Known Traveler Digital Identity or known digital identity of the traveler, in French). Led by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the project was designed in anticipation of the upcoming increase in the number of airspace travelers over the next few years and decades.
" By 2030, some 1.8 billion people will be flying overseas, up 50% from 2016, " comments Christoph Wolf., the director of mobility at the GEF. As things stand, the influx remains manageable with today's means. But this assertion will naturally be challenged over the years and will come the time when it will be necessary to adapt.
Passport data contained in an encrypted application
During these tests, intended to serve as a basis for the future, travelers navigating between Montreal or Toronto and Amsterdam have the opportunity to record, on their smartphone, the personal information that their passport contains. The data is integrated into an application encrypted by blockchain technology, tamper-proof, which allows reliability in the flow of information.
The passage to the airport of these travelers will be doubled by a check via facial recognition, which will prevent them from having to go through the border police. For the moment, the reception of the passengers is half fig and half grape. While some appreciate this time saving, others fear a leak of their personal information and wish to stick to the use of their good old passport.
