Amazon is developing fast V in France, ignoring ecological issues, to strengthen its hegemony in the territory and e-commerce.
In the wake of Amazon, its announcement early this week of the hiring of 1,900 new employees in France and the crossing of the 9,000 employees in the territory, the journal of ecology, Reporterre, publishes the first part of his excellent survey devoted to the giant of e-commerce. This is obviously not very flattering and reports a firm that builds many warehouses, sorting centers, and is always seeking more polluting trucks, to even faster deliver parcels in the hexagon.
500,000 m² of Amazon warehouses in France
To feed Amazon with Amazon parcels, Jeff Bezos' firm does not skimp on the means and reaps the fruits, with a turnover of some 6.5 billion euros in the country last year.
Since the inauguration of its first warehouse, a beautiful 70,000 m² baby located in Saran, a few miles from Orleans, Amazon has come a long way. Today, its platforms flood the country and its delivery vehicles down thousands of kilometers. And the group's storage areas reach 500,000 m² in France. As much to say to you that one does not do better.
Warehouses built by Amazon are bigger and bigger. In 2017, a logistics platform of 107,000 m² was opened in the Somme, in Boves. But this is still modest compared to the warehouse that the company is erecting on the side of Brétigny-Sur-Orge, not far from Paris. The latter, of 142,000 m², should be operational by the end of the year. For information, the average surface of a logistics platform generally reaches 17,500 m² in France.

Amazon gives itself the means of its ambitions, advancing sometimes masked
Amazon wants to be able to deliver all the French, wherever they are, in one day (subject to having the Premium subscription, of course). If the practical aspect is exceptional, the logistics and the necessary infrastructure are also exceptional. Because to reduce the time between ordering and delivery, the giant must expand, again and again.
The firm is growing so much that some of its warehouses are not "official", as reveals Reporterre. If the logistics warehouse of Senlis (in the Oise, 55 000 m²) bears the colors of Amazon, the company has not yet formalized anything. This secrecy is in particular held by local elected officials, as evidenced by the confidentiality clause signed by the town hall of Senlis. In short, Amazon is there without being there.
Amazon would build and in great secrecy (almost) new warehouses in a subcontractor to other deposit of the building permit or the purchase of land. Some real estate companies serve him a real Trojan horse and allow the American company to advance hidden, perhaps to cover their tracks and avoid running afoul of the local population.
Sacrifices of local elected officials, forced to make soft eyes
The implementation of Amazon in France is not random. " It first targets impoverished regions, abandoned by industry where it can easily blackmail employment, negotiate tax benefits," said the spokesman of the association Attac, Raphael Pradeau. The company would, therefore, benefit from the difficulties suffered by local authorities, deprived of various subsidies, to bend them. " It is certain that if it is not done at home, it will be elsewhere, and the territory will lose jobs and tax revenues " claims, fatalist, Didier Vignolle, elected to the municipality of Aramon, in the Gard.
Communities often make sacrifices to accommodate Amazon. On the Boves side, the local elected officials paid three million euros to renovate the roads and build a roundabout to smooth the passage of incessant trucks smiling yellow. Senlis spent 100,000 euros to improve access to the firm's website.
Emmanuel Macron himself adumbrates this strategy of Amazon, which manages to convince by multiplying the recruitments and being a catalyst for the economy. The Head of State inaugurated in person the Boves platform, in 2017. The signature of an irreversible blank check?
