Discriminated because of their age, 200 job seekers receive $ 11 million from Google

Google was accused of discriminating against older job seekers who had decided to launch a class action against them. The action has paid off.

The Google giant was sued before the federal judge by more than 200 job seekers who had filed a class action against the firm of Mountain View, accusing him of having discriminated against the age at the time of the processing of applications to join the company. When they filed their applications, the applicants were all at least 40 years old.

Federal Judge Provides Right to Complainants

To end the dispute, Google has agreed to pay the sum of about $ 11 million. This amount corresponds to the $ 35,000 paid to each of the 227 plaintiffs, the $ 2.75 million to be paid by the lawyers and the additional $ 10,000 to Cheryl Fillekes, the principal plaintiff.

Cheryl Fillekes, a software engineer, said she had been received four times by Google, without ever turning her interviews into a job proposal, claiming to be a victim of the company's recruitment policy ."Age discrimination is a problem that needs to be addressed in the technology sector [...]. We are delighted to have been able to reach a fair settlement for all of our clients on this issue, " commented the complainant's lawyer.

Google does not recognize discrimination but will have to act

In addition to the $ 11 million disbursed, Google will have to put water in his wine. Although the firm does not acknowledge having rejected applications due to the age of the interested individuals, even though they had been recognized as being Google-compatible, it will have to train its employees, especially from human resources, not to be guided by age-related prejudices. Google will also have to create a committee focused on diversity in recruitment.

The Gafa, attached to the idea of a "young" and "dynamic" image, have not always thought about it while dropping the average age of their employees. The average age of a Facebook contributor is 29, while that of an Amazon employee rises to 30 years.
