Autonomous car: PSA takes another step in driving

The PSA manufacturer, in collaboration with Vinci Autoroutes, was able to test new features of its autonomous vehicle in real traffic conditions.

In 2016, the PSA group and the motorway infrastructure operator Vinci Autoroutes began their collaboration on mobility and the autonomous vehicle. This resulted in a first conclusive test, on July 2017, when a Citroën C4 Picasso had managed to cross the toll of Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines in total autonomy, without any intervention of the driver, thanks to a communication between the infrastructure and the vehicle. Two years later, tests continued on a Peugeot 3008.

The vehicle crosses a zone of works in all autonomy and in real conditions

To continue their experiments, PSA and Vinci Autoroutes have once again targeted the Île-de-France and Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines regions. The major objective for the French car group, which develops its AVA program (autonomous vehicle for all), was to push a little further the communication between the car and the toll, but also to strengthen the capacity of the vehicle in real conditions, in fairly complex situations.

Thursday, July 11, 3008 had to face two different situations. He first had to cross a traffic zone temporarily modified (because of work) in autonomous mode. Then the vehicle proceeded to its safety(safe stop) autonomous, without the driver taking again the hand. The maneuver was to direct the vehicle to a safe area in the event that a particular event could occur (an obstacle on the roadway, particularly bad weather conditions), or if the highway comes to an end.

Strengthen communication between the autonomous vehicle and the infrastructure

Experiments took place between Dourdan and Ablis, on the A10 and A11 motorways. For Carla Gohin, director of new technologies for the PSA group, "this experiment marks a further step in the deployment of the autonomous vehicle. Two years after the first experiment, it is a question of integrating more and more constraints in the use cases by reinforcing the communication between the autonomous vehicle and the infrastructure to widen the field of action of the system while guaranteeing the security. "

The boss of Vinci Autoroutes and incidentally deputy general manager of Vinci, Pierre Coppey, for its part considers that"The intelligent highway infrastructure is an essential asset for the development of the autonomous vehicle. It makes it possible to enrich the contextual data disseminated to the guidance system to optimize the decision-making of the vehicle and its trajectory, "he says.

In 2017, for the autonomous crossing of the tollgate, Vinci and PSA had installed a guidance system 500 meters upstream of the toll, allowing the autonomous vehicle to follow a predefined path, which allowed him to find his way even in the no marking on the ground.
