New York City Could Ban Sales of User Geolocation Data
New York

New York could become the first city to ban the sale of consumer geolocation data. The city has proposed a law to this effect.

The collection of personal data is a thorny subject. Their resale is perhaps more so. A few weeks ago, we informed you that the average monthly cost of data of a user or mobile user would be between 5 and 20 dollars. If this necessarily motivates those who hold them to monetize them, one of the largest cities in the world, New York, wants to oppose the resale of personal data from the geolocation of smartphones. Big Apple is making a law proposal to ban the practice.

Each violation will be liable to a fine

In New York, and if the proposed law is passed, reselling personal data collected within the city by third parties would become illegal and constitute an act punishable by a large monetary fine as long as the data is collected without consent.

Mobile operators and apps that puncture geolocation-related information could be fined up to $ 1,000 per violation. The amount could even reach $ 10,000 if multiple violations occur on the same day. Aggrieved users would even have the right to sue the offending companies.

New York can become a model for data protection

If the law is adopted, New York would serve as a model by becoming the first city to legislate on this subject. But the opposition promises to be intense, the market of personal data being particularly lucrative. The pressure is still growing stronger around the digital players, more and more monitored.

"  As a city, we have a chance to lead the charge on this," said councilor Justin Brannan, bill bearer, sure of his strength. "  If the federal government does not ban this dangerous invasion of citizens' privacy, we must do so,  " he said. Let's wait and see what happens to the proposal.
