Has Intel overestimated its ability to miniaturize the process of burning with its processors in 10 nm? In any case, this is what Bob Swan, PD.G.of the company at a conference organized by Fortune Media.
Humble, the owner of the American foundry admitted to having eyes bigger than the belly to try to respect Moore's law. Intel has nonetheless reassured: yes, the processors in 10 nm will arrive well by the end of the year.
Innovation goals too "aggressive"
During his panel, Bob Swan came back without taboo on what caused the successive postponement of its processors in 10 nm - originally planned in 2016. Originally, Intel had set the goal of reducing finesse engraving of his drivers every two years. But going directly from 14 nm to 10 nm, the foundry faced insoluble challenges.
A motivated appetite, confesses the entrepreneur, by the competition which was getting harder and harder on this segment. With its success on the 14 nm, the founder has grown wings and decided to hit harder by increasing the density of transistors in its processors 2.7 times against 2 times according to its commitments. Very aggressive ambitions so, having a vocation to cut the grass under the foot of an AMD which then took the hair of the beast on this market.
AMD for which Intel does not hide his admiration. In an internal note, the smelter conceded being impressed by his rival's progress in etching density. As a reminder, the Ryzen 3 processors recently put on the market by the red team are engraved in 7 nm.
Intel promises 7nm processors in 2021
Making amends by revealing behind the scenes of the failed 10 nm processors does not prevent Intel from making plans on the comet. Bob Swan has confirmed that in the future, his company would limit itself to multiplying the density of transistors in its processors by two every two years.
Thus, Intel announces that its processors in 7 nm should arrive on the market during the end of 2021. A promise that, hopefully, will be held this time.
