Activision-Blizzard earns more money with WoW and Call of Duty, but loses players

Activision Blizzard

Fewer players, but more income. Activision Blizzard does not retain as much as before but still manages to generate cash.

Activision Blizzard released its results for the third quarter of 2019. The group performed better than expected, enough to reassure the market a few weeks after the Blitzchung affair and BlizzCon announcements.

Thanks, WoW Classic and Call of Duty: Mobile

Thus, the group's turnover amounted to $ 1.21 billion, while analysts predicted rather $ 1.16 billion. Most revenue is attributed to King ( Candy Crush ), the mobile gaming specialist, who contributes $ 500 million for Q3 2019. Follow Blizzard ($ 394 million) and Activision ($ 209 million).

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, says the World of Warcraft and Call of Duty licenses have helped these numbers. If there has not been an extension of WoW this year ( Battle for Azeroth was released in 2018 and Shadowlands is planned for 2020), the launch of Classic has made players come back on the MMORPG. For now, Blizzard notes that the commitment remains strong on Classic, while an exodus of players was expected after a few weeks.

As for Call of Duty, the new Modern: Warfare, which has been well received by critics and the community and could break records, is not counted for Q3. With more than 100 million downloads the launch of Call of Duty: Mobile has also been a success, taken into account this time.

The players desert

Nevertheless, and this is a trend that continues, the gaming giant continues to lose players, for the third consecutive quarter. We go from 327 million gamers in the second quarter of 2019 to 316 million. The losses are quite heavy in King (- 11 million) and more measured in Activision (- 1 million). Blizzard, for its part, has an increase of 1 million players.

Finally, the group said they were very satisfied with the return of the players on Diablo IV, which opened the BlizzCon, where a playable demo was available. He also explains that Diablo Immortals, the much-maligned mobile game, is progressing well.

Best of all, we learn that Blizzard is working on new licenses. It remains to be seen when we hear about it and if the projects will see the light of day.
