It has only been a few weeks since Bosch unveiled new electric motors for bikes, planned for 2020. Yamaha follows suit, suggesting future engines for the same year.
The brand, previously known for its motorcycles, has committed in September 2018 in the segment of electric bikes. After the announcement of a new electric scooter (the EC-05 ) intended only for the Asian market, the brand seems to want to maintain a leading position in the field of electric mobility.
Assistance up to 45 km / h
That said, Yamaha is not anyone in this area. In 1989, the brand even initiated it, proposing the first electric bike in the world. To maintain its rank, Yamaha unveils two new ranges of electric motors for bicycles: PW-X2 and PW-ST.
First intended for mountain bikes, or close to trekking, the PW-X2 has a power of 250W and five modes (EXPW, High, STD, Eco and Eco +). The device delivers a torque of 80 Nm in EXPW mode, and 70 Nm in all other modes. The PW-X2 is designed to assist pedaling up to 25 km / h. It comes in another version, the PW-X2 45, whose electric assistance continues up to 45 km /h! For this, its power goes to 500W.
Despite a doubled power between them, both models have an identical weight of 3.1 kilos. The trend in the sector is also lightening. Bosch, for its part, has managed to reduce the weight of its Performance CX by more than a kilogram, putting it under the bar of three kilos. The results of this scheme are less clear at Yamaha.

A complete kit for the mountain
The PW-ST range is heavier, with 3.4 kilos. The model displays four modes, an assistance limit of up to 25 km / h and a torque of 70 Nmregardless of the mode engaged. Yet Yamaha makes it clear that it is designed for "Speed Pedelec," electric bikes up to 45 km /h.
A priori, the brand has therefore rather thought of it as a compromise: the PW-ST must be more versatile, assisting both mountain and flat terrain.
Both ranges include four sensors that communicate torque and cadence, bike speed and angle. The engine must optimize its assistance
continuously, depending on the difficulties encountered by the cyclist, and whether he climbs or descends. On the other hand, the purchase is subject to options, especially regarding the possibilities of mounting the battery. Finally, accessories offer a display of the speed, mode chosen, the remaining battery life, GPS navigation and a pairing with various applications for smartphones.
