Despite the launch of the Xbox One S All-Digital last May, hardware and software sales attributed to Microsoft's Xbox division declined by 10 percent compared to the same period last year.
Video game: the ugly duckling of Microsoft
Video gaming is, in fact, the only downward business for Microsoft in the last quarter of its fiscal year (which ended June 30th). The 10% discussed above represents a shortfall of 1.8 billion euros for the firm of Redmond.
But even more than this general loss, which is finally quite measured in Microsoft's annual profit of 34.7 billion euros, it is sales of Xbox consoles that are staining. During the last quarter, they plummeted by 48%, and this, despite the launch (admittedly, discreet) of a console entirely devoted to the game in dematerialized.
Games and services also show a decline of 3% compared to the same period last year. A decline attributable, according to the financial report, to " a game of third party publisher " that we imagine being Fortnite. Losses, reassures Microsoft, partially offset by " the increase in the share of subscriptions ." It must be here subscriptions to Xbox Live and of course the Xbox Game Pass, which is now available on PC. The firm, however, refuses to disclose any figures concerning these products.
Probably no start before 2021
Microsoft has the distinction of closing its fiscal year on June 30, the release of the Xbox Scarlett, scheduled for the end of 2020, will not come to enhance its record in gaming in this fiscal year.
In all likelihood, the downward trend is unlikely to improve in the next 12 months for Microsoft's gaming division. Xbox sales are going downhill, and only the growing popularity of the Game Pass seems to be able to ensure regular revenue for Microsoft video game at the moment.
