Microsoft predicts that AI will lead to an increase of $ 5 trillion in global GDP

growth environment

$ 5 trillion: this is the increase in global GDP if the use of AI was generalized.

That's the conclusion Microsoft brought in a study led by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

A productivity gain due to the use of AI

The 4.4% increase in global GDP would be possible according to both companies, thanks to the widespread use of artificial intelligence. More global use of these AIs would, they say, help increase global productivity, especially in sectors such as agriculture, energy or transport, in the first place.

A different increase according to the regions of the globe since it would seem that more massive exploitation of the AI greatly helps Europe with a growth of 5.4% of the GDP on the continent. A record, where the least impacted country would be South Africa, with a 1.3% increase in GDP.

However, even if this growth seems impressive, Microsoft and PwC have largely revised down their prediction since, in 2017, a previous report announced an increase of 15 700 billion dollars or 14% of global GDP.

Greenhouse gases could also decrease

The report released by the two companies also announces that this global use of artificial intelligence could see greenhouse gases decrease. Note that this is a data completely forgotten two years ago. The reduction of these gases, still according to Microsoft and PwC, would be possible thanks to the use of these AI, mainly in the regions of the northern hemisphere.

It is North America that would be the most impacted with a reduction of these gases by 6%, where South Africa would again benefit very little with a reduction of only 0.2% of gas emissions. greenhouse effect. It is also the sectors of agriculture, energy, and transport which would be the most impacted,1.3 gigatonnes of CO2 released.

The increase in GDP would, therefore, be significant, according to the report of Microsoft and PwC, but these figures still leave some issues unresolved, such as the change it would have on employment or the environmental consequences of the increase in consumption. driven by this sudden rise in productivity.
